Project overview:

Bitpanda Custody, which utilizes Trust Vault, seeks to fundamentally change the manner in which institutions store, manage, and automize crypto assets in a secure and operationally efficient manner. As the digital asset economy rises, businesses need more than cold storage solutions, they need insured custody, a programmable workflow solution, a secure custody platform to manage and enforce compliance, as well as an ability to scale custody operations without compromising security.

Trust Vault acts as a solution by providing a simplified custodial wallet platform which has been built exclusively for banks, asset managers, fintech companies and enterprises entering into crypto.
The primary goal of the project was the creation of a cutting-edge custody platform that integrated enterprise-grade security with a user-friendly SaaS-style experience. This involved incorporating advanced cryptographic controls, a tamper-resistant key management system, automated processes through APIs, and customizable user permission structures, ensuring compliance along the way.

Our approach to development was to re-imagine the platforms architecture using a modular architecture that could easily scale while being built entirely modularly with ReactJS, NextJS, NodeJS, and MongoDB. While still remaining compliant with institutional operations, applied modern UI/UX design principles to elevate the perceptions of institutional security, making it an approachable experience even for non-technical users. In addition, AI driven components were deployed to track threats/monitor anomalies and optimize workflows.

The Problem

Prior to any redevelopment, custodial institutions faced numerous operational, security, and compliance issues when managing digital assets. Traditional custodial tools were out of date, lacking automation, not API friendly, and not easily integrated with today’s modern fintech ecosystem. Many of the platforms also suffered from using old UI frameworks that resulted in complicated user experiences, disjointed workflows, and long wait times for effective decision making.

The project kick-off identified the following challenges:

  • Security Concerns: Security remained the leading concern. Existing solutions could not provide user-friendly access to institutional-grade protection. Key management workflows were exposed to human error and slow approval processes were either rigid or manual, while multi-signature workflows did not provide sufficient transparency. Institutions wanted insured storage with tamper-proof crypto processes, while most tools available only had basic encryption and no holistic governance or risk management features.
  • Scalability Challenges: Financial institutions looking to expand into digital asset verticals wanted a scalable solution that would match their growth. Many legacy custody platforms could not keep up with the evolution of blockchain networks, or multiple asset classes or high volume and automated trading transactions. Custody and other internal systems—such as treasury desks, trading platforms, and compliance engines—required extensive engineering to integrate together, due to poorly designed APIs.
  • Operational Inefficiencies: Teams were forced to spend an extraordinary amount of time reviewing logs and verifying transactions manually, which negatively impacted response times and operational overhead. Most institutions could not have smart automation in place to enjoy security and efficiency at the same time.
  • Need for a Next-Generation Platform:These issues led to the demand for a next-generation custodial platform: a platform that could unify security, automation, analytics, and compliance into one area. Bitpanda Custody began its journey to solve this exact problem.
The Solution

To tackle these issues, our response included a new custodial platform that utilizes the secure infrastructure of Trust Vault. The new solution incorporates a modular system architecture that employs ReactJS, NextJS, NodeJS, and MongoDB to enable performance, scalability, and integration with external fintech ecosystems.

The core of the solution is an institutional-grade security engine with insured cryptographic key storage, controlled access workflows, and automated approvals of transactions. APIs were enhanced to support more high-volume transaction automation, which allows institutions to build custodial functionality directly into proprietary internal systems, trading platforms, and treasury operations.

Compliance workflows were improved with automated logs, audit trails, and configurable approval specifically designed for institutions.
With a drag-and-drop asset management interface, real-time analytics, and customizable user roles, teams with varying levels of technical expertise can transition and complete tasks smoothly. With multi-chain support, institutions can manage varied digital assets, through a single platform designed to be secure, flexible, and scalable.

The Result

Organizations can now enjoy insured and secure storage using transparent cryptographic workflows, significantly lowering security risk. Additionally, the enhanced UI/UX transforms complex custody management into a more seamless, effective, enterprise-grade experience for operational teams.
